How Motorcycles Are Shipped
Motorcycles are typically shipped one of three ways: on a dedicated motorcycle trailer (the safest option — bikes are secured upright with wheel chocks and soft straps); on an open car carrier with a motorcycle pallet or crate (common for long-distance shipments where the bike shares space with vehicles); or in an enclosed trailer (premium option for high-value bikes). The method depends on the carrier, the route, and your budget.
Cost Range
Motorcycle shipping runs roughly 35–45% of what a comparable car shipment would cost on the same route. Short-distance (under 500 miles): $250–$450. Mid-range (500–1,000 miles): $400–$700. Cross-country (1,500+ miles): $600–$1,100. Enclosed or crated transport adds 40–60% to these ranges. Non-running motorcycles that can't be wheeled onto a trailer may require crating, which adds $150–$300.
Preparation
Drain fuel to one-quarter tank. Disconnect the battery or ensure the kill switch is accessible. Remove saddlebags, windshields, and any loose accessories. Photograph the bike from all angles — scratches on chrome and paint are common pre-existing conditions that get disputed. Note any existing dents, scratches, or mechanical issues on the Bill of Lading. If shipping with a crate, use foam padding around mirrors, handlebars, and any protruding components.
Carrier Selection
Not all auto transport carriers handle motorcycles. Ask your broker specifically about motorcycle experience — a carrier accustomed to hauling cars may not have the right equipment or experience to properly secure a motorcycle. Wheel chock systems, soft-tie straps, and proper weight distribution are critical. A motorcycle that shifts during transport can sustain frame and cosmetic damage.
Insurance
Standard carrier cargo insurance covers motorcycles, but verify the coverage limit against your bike's value. High-value motorcycles (Ducati, BMW, Harley-Davidson touring models, vintage bikes) may exceed standard coverage limits. The same supplemental insurance considerations that apply to luxury cars apply to high-value motorcycles.
